Simon Sinek: How Extraordinary Leaders Evolve

(Quoted from http://www.inc.com/stephanie-meyers/simon-sinek-evolution-leadership.html)

Simon Sinek doesn't have the second-most-watched TED talk for nothing. His speech on "How great leaders inspire action," based on his signature concept of starting with "why," is currently at more than 11.5 million views. (Sinek later distilled his TED talk into this briefer video for Inc.) But the author and speaker is now investigating something new: what he calls the "circle of safety."
In this exclusive Inc. interview, Sinek explains how he arrived at his new thinking and how it applies to leaders today. But his real goal? He hopes to inspire everyone who reads it to immediately take action toward feeling more fulfilled.
Your new book deals in part with the evolutionary roots of leadership. What lessons can modern-day leaders take from their ancestors?
I looked at the Paleolithic era, when homo sapiens first started walking. We lived in relatively small populations, and the only way that we could survive the dangers was if we worked together; everything about the human animal is designed to work together. That's what human beings do. We're really good at looking after each other when the conditions are right.
Leaders are the ones who control the environment. It’s not about hiring great people. All of this top-grading and promoting the top ten percent and getting rid of the bottom 25 percent ... it's bullshit. All it does is destroy the organization, because it means that nobody feels safe. It's terrible, absolutely terrible, based on biology.
The leaders control the circle of safety. To be the leader, you have to belong to our tribe. We have to feel like you serve us, and we would happily serve you.
A "circle of safety" makes sense in a literal way for our ancestors, but how does that apply in a business?
I've been visiting some amazing organizations that seemed to defy all logic, that didn't have layoffs in the bad economy--a tech company in NYC, a manufacturing company in the Midwest, the Marine Corp. boot camp.
I noticed a pattern: Inside all these organizations, the people who work there feel safe. They feel that the person to the left of them and the person to the right would protect them if something happened. We always confront danger every day, in life and in business. When we feel safe, remarkable things start to happen.
How can a leader use this idea of safety to improve his or her businesses?
Actions speak louder than words. All companies say they care, right? But few actually exercise that care. The cost of leadership is self-interest. It might actually mean you have slower growth over the short term. It might mean you have to take less money in a bad economy.
So what about when the circle of safety fails? What can a leader do if there's the modern-day business equivalent of a saber-tooth tiger attack?
The leader controls the perimeter. In a poorly-run organization, the CEO usually puts the circle of safety only around the senior executives. If you're in the senior level, you're fine. The board gives the CEO a raise while at the same time, thousands of people get laid off. A good leader will send that circle right to the very edges of the company. And it will extend out to loyal customers.
What can someone do to be a better leader? What if they're a manager rather than a CEO?
Leadership has one definition: leaders are willing to sacrifice themselves for their people. As a senior leader you have to extend the circle wider, and if you have 3 people that work for you, your job is to work for them.
Real leaders are the very few willing to sacrifice themselves for their people. When they do, we will do anything to see that our leader's visions are advanced.
That’s why we call them leaders: they go first.
Simon Sinek will be speaking at a full-day Q&A session sponsored by Inc. on August 15 at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, New York.

Alternative Solution to Arthritis and Pinched Spinal Nerve (by Alaina Liew)

There is always one or more solutions to each problem, as long as the root cause is identified. Then, individual needs to take action(s) and make the right choice in order to tackle the issue. Or else, the situation will remain unchanged, or may even get worse.

My wife, Alaina Liew, has a story to share:

---  ---  ---

On December 8, 2009, our daughter, Nayomi, was born. My husband, Ka Heng and I were delighted with our healthy little girl. I was also very thankful for the quick labor and delivery, pushing only for about a half an hour. It was not until the next day that I started to see the negative effect that the intense labor had on me.

It was a couple of hours before I was to be released from the hospital. I went to get Nayomi out of her crib and had not realized how weak and numb my legs were. The next thing I knew, I had fallen to the floor! A nurse told me that it was probably because of my intense labor and the fact that I had been lying in bed in the same position, which can reduce my blood circulation. She told me to try to walk and massage my legs as much as possible and give it a few days.

Going home, I did what I was told without improvement. I was scared and wondered if I would ever get better. I was afraid to walk with the Nayomi, not wanting to fall and hurt her. Ka Heng or my mother would have to bring her to me when she needed, changing or feeding.  After a few days of not feeling better, I called my OB doctor, who told me that it was normal after having an episiotomy and just to give it time and stay off my legs as much as possible.

The numbness and the weakness persisted. Would I ever get better?  What would happen if my daughter began walking before I got better?  How would I keep up? Before he went to work, my husband would bring Nayomi and I down stairs, and we would stay there till he came home in the evening. After a month and a half, I finally got the courage to carry my daughter down the stairs. Taking walks was next to impossible; my legs would get shaky after a few a minutes.  Every week I called my doctor and she would tell me that it was normal. Finally, after three long months the doctor gave me an appointment. After a check up and having no answers, she referred me to a neurologist. I went to see the neurologist, who then prescribed an MRI. The results from the test showed that I had some arthritis that had flared up and pinched a lower nerve at my back, which was the cause of my pain and suffering. At my follow up appointment, the neurologist told me to stretch and do yoga and give it time.

Every day I would try and stretch and my condition seemed to be improving a bit, though I was worried that it was not fast enough. In August, eight month later, Ka Heng was talking to a nutritional specialist at a Market America International Convention. That specialist gave Ka Heng a list of MA products that would help to reduce the inflammation in my arthritis. Every day I took three caps of OPC3s, two caps of calcium, two caps of digestive enzymes, two caps of B-vitamins, and 4 capsules of Omega III fish oil (2 after breakfast and 2 after dinner).

Over the following weeks of taking those natural supplements, I began to feel improvement. After three or four weeks, I was back to my normal self. It had been about nine month of struggling with my handicap. I had always kind of doubted the quality of MA products. However, after all that I went through and the amazing recovery, I now believe in the product 100%. Now Nayomi is walking and I can enjoy chasing after her with no problem or pain!

I've just made a choice!

It is my 2013 new year resolution to write a blog about my life.

My writing skill is not that great since I started learning 3 different languages (Chinese, Malay and English) when I was 7. So, please pardon my sentence making and grammatical errors.

33 years passed by since I was born, there were happy and sad moments. Some just happened out of my control, and some were the results of my decisions.

I choose "Life is Simply Choices" as my new blog's title because my 33 years of life experience and some wisdom from successful persons taught me so.

Anyway, there is a book <10 Choices: A Proven Plan to Change Your Life Forever> written by Pastor James MacDonald sitting on my bookshelf. To be honest, I have not started reading even the first page. It is now in my to-do list in 2013!
